Florries learner qualifies for ATKV Redenaars final
Hoërskool Florida learner qualifies for national ATKV Redenaars finals, and need your help to get to Cape Town.
A Grade 11 learner from Hoërskool Florida has achieved a remarkable feat by qualifying for the national finals of the ATKV Redenaars competition.
This prestigious event will take place on August 5 in Cape Town, and Jasmine Doller is the only learner from her school to have qualified for this competition in five years.
Jasmine started public speaking in Grade Five and has been participating in groups. However, this year, she started participating individually, and her hard work has paid off. She says she likes public speaking because of the confidence it brings to her and the indirect communication skills she gets by standing in front of a huge crowd.
To qualify for the national finals, she placed second regionally and will be competing in the Afrikaans first additional language category, even though she speaks English at home.
“I’m very excited for this opportunity. It is something that I worked hard for. This competition means a lot to me, it’s a chance that represents everything that I have worked hard for, and it shows what people are capable of when they are given a chance,” she says.
Her parents, Jason and Janine Doller, also expressed their extreme pride in their daughter, saying, “She has always been dedicated and we are very proud that she is being recognised for her hard work. She puts time, energy, and dedication, and we are hugely impressed.”
However, due to a communication glitch, Jasmine and her family only found out about her qualification at the end of June. This has left them with a short notice period and a relatively high cost to organise things at the last minute.
They therefore started a crowdfunding initiative on the platform GoGetFunding, to raise funds that will be used for accommodation, transportation and food while away from home.
Jasmine hopes to arrive two days before the event starts and leave the day after it ends. She is grateful for any support she can get to make this opportunity a success.
