Emergency responders teach fire safety to Wilgeheuwel learners
From exploring a rescue vehicle to getting up close with a fire hose, the learners had a practical introduction to what to do in an emergency.
Learners at Lighthouse NextGen and GOD schools received a closer look at the work of emergency responders when SCP Private Search & Rescue visited them on Monday, September 21.
According to Delia Hendrikz, a representative for the schools, the visit included learners from preschool through to high school, with the SCP fire crew demonstrating emergency equipment and speaking to learners about fire safety.

“Members of the SCP fire crew spoke to the children about what to do during a fire or other emergency, how to remain calm and the importance of listening carefully to emergency personnel,” said Hendrikz.
During the visit, learners explored the fire and rescue vehicle, looked at the equipment used by the crew and tried on firefighters’ hard hats. They also had an opportunity to ask questions about the work of the rescue team.

The practical part of the visit saw learners interact with the crew. “The children had enormous fun interacting with the fire crew and being sprayed with water from the fire hose,” Hendrikz shared.

According to Hendrikz, the visit also gave learners an opportunity to develop their understanding of emergency preparedness.
“For Lighthouse NextGen and GOD schools, the visit was about much more than simply having fun. It helped build confidence, encouraged curiosity and gave learners practical knowledge that could prove invaluable during a real emergency,” she said.
