Royal Kings School celebrated its 10th anniversary by giving back to the community it serves during a visit to St Laurence’s Children’s Haven on September 12.

Learners and staff spent the day at the Discovery-based children’s home, where they handed over a collection of non-perishable items donated by learners, parents and staff over the past few weeks.

The programme began with a tour of the home led by Haven co-founder Richard Malan, who shared its history and explained the work it does to care for vulnerable children. Malan also reflected on the home’s 25-year journey of providing children with a safe and caring environment.

Following the tour, the school handed over the donations before learners spent time interacting and playing with the children. The visit ended with the group sharing lunch.

Meaningful impact

Royal Kings principal Godfrey Sentongo said the school wanted to mark its 10-year milestone in a way that would have a meaningful impact on the community.

“Ten years is a big moment for us, and we felt the best way to celebrate was to give back. As a school, we cannot stand alone without the community.”

Malan thanked the school for its generosity, saying both the donations and the time spent with the children were meaningful.

“We really appreciate what Royal Kings has done. The donations will help us a lot day-to-day, but the visit itself meant even more to the children. It shows that they are loved and valued, and the interaction means a lot to us,” he said.

St Laurence’s Children’s Haven was founded in January 2001 by a group of lifelong friends from the West Rand. Situated in Discovery, the home provides care and support to abused, neglected and abandoned children, offering them a safe, warm and nurturing environment.
