We will destroy ourselves

Sad Historian from Roodepoort, writes:

I read with sadness about the destruction of the railway stations in Roodepoort, published in the Record of 30 October.

How disappointing it is that there is no pride in this country.

Unfortunately, as a Roodepoort resident for the last 36 years and being a lover of anything old with history, I never went to the now destroyed stations and wish I had. Some of those stations were built over 100 years ago, surely with such pride and made to last. But thugs can destroy in days/ weeks.

It is another example of the government failing to conserve our heritage and never mind the inconvenience to commuters, who have to find alternate modes of transport. I wonder if there are higher powers behind this destruction?

If they handed down harsher prison sentences for the perpetrators at scrap yards, this would not happen. One wonders who is benefiting from this. Someone senior who turns a blind eye to our now common corruption?

What will they target next ?

We are becoming a lost cause in this country; never mind the coronavirus, we will destroy ourselves.
