#FlashbackFriday: Remember when you could rent 20 movies for R50?

Join us as we rewind to the days of video rentals, shopping bargains and local achievements.

Let’s take a trip back in time … to 1990.

Thirty-five years ago, the world looked a lot different in many ways, from fashion to hairstyles, and we can’t forget the ‘low’ prices of everyday items (wow … if only the prices stayed the same, the style… might be a different story).

In the Roodepoort Record dated August 31, 1990, we saw Bernard Robertson holding the trophy that was awarded to the Businessman of the Year. There was also a reward for stolen clothes. There was also a R100 cheque received by Jenny Granger, the money was raised during the Moth fete.

Jenny Granger won a R100 cheque.

The SPAR in Honeydew had great prices on everyday items from 99 cents! (If only products had the same prices today.)

The price of computers were a lot different compared to today.

Desktop publishing systems were all the rage … and you could finance them for only R100 per month!

The music festival at Westgate Mall.

Westgate Mall also had a music festival, and the standard of the entries was very high. Danel van den Heever was only 10 years old at the time and was awarded the title for best potential player. We wonder what she’s doing now?

Back when VHS were still a thing, you could rent 20 movies for only R50. Imagine a Netflix subscription for that price!

Karen Senekal also had her eyes set on the 1996 Olympics. We wonder if she ever got to go?
