I wish to bring the public’s attention to a scam that is contributing to the increasing disappearance of dogs in our area.
There is a syndicate that uses the following modus operandi: They steal dogs, and then monitor the social media platforms for rewards offered for the return of the pet. They then return the pet to the owner with the explanation that it was found wandering on the freeway, or in the township.
They then pocket the reward (sometimes thousands of rand), and then move onto the next victim. The other problem is that they monitor these media platforms, and will steal dogs of the same breed and appearance, and try and claim a reward for the lookalike. This happened to my neighbour.
Please be alert to these scams!
