A tribute to Warrant Officer Lourens ‘Jakes’ Jacobs of the West Rand Flying Squad who died on July 8.

He was a dedicated and loyal member of the South African Police Service.

He was passionate about policing, his family and friends, and his absolute love was fishing.

His policing was old school, stop-and-search. He said that’s how you get successes, and he made a difference to the community that he worked in.

We shared many memories with him, and we also got to know the other side of Jakes. Underneath that bulletproof vest was a very caring and compassionate person.

The South African Police Service has lost a real-life hero. He regularly kept contact and was concerned with the well-being of people.

To the Jacobs family we extend our deepest condolences, Jakes will be sorely missed. People all over knew RR104.
