Philander strikes, finally

Vernon Philander managed to take two wickets, even if they were tailenders.

Proteas bowler Vernon Philander got two wickets and wrapped up the Sri Lankan innings for 421 within an hour after lunch on the second day of the second match against South Africa Friday.

Philander took care of Mendis and Lakmal with a little help from wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock, who took both catches behind the stumps.

South African bowlers Dale Steyn, Philander, and JP Duminy all finished with two wickets each.

Earlier, Sri Lanka star batsman Mahela Jayawardene had recorded a powerful 165 to give Sri Lanka the advantage.

At lunch, Sri Lanka were 395-6 with test debutant Niroshan Dickwella batting on 63 and Dilruwan Perera on nine.

Jayawardene was run out by a direct hit from Alviro Petersen about 30 minutes from lunch.

South Africa lead the two-test series 1-0 after winning the first match in Galle by 153 runs.
