Roodepoort juniors clean sweep festive season tournament

Part of the cricket holiday programme, preparations are under way for the 2021 season

Summer just would not be the same without the smell of mowed lawn, a bat, ball and whatever you want to use for wickets.

Arranged by Delfos Cricket Club as part of the Black Widow Holiday Cricket schedule, five clubs would test the skills of their U13 and U15 competitors. Played at Roodepoort Cricket Club and Florida Park High, local interests were represented by Delfos Cricket Club, Roodepoort Cricket Club and Western Warriors who are based at The Kings School West Rand.

The three day competition, from 8 to 10 December, would see each team play four T20 matches in a round robin format. “The purpose was to create activity for youngsters leading up to the school holidays” said Faizel Sallie, Delfos Cricket Club Chairman. This was not the first action on the pitch this year with teh first balls being bowled as early as October. “We participated in a Junior Tournament where about 48 teams from under 9 to under 17 participated. Over 600 youngsters participated in this tournament” added Faizel.

Between the wickets, the week was dominated by the teams that call Voortrekker Park home. Each section was won by Roodepoort Cricket Club who notched a clean four win sweep for both U13s and U15s. Bright stars gave us a glimpse of future potential as U13 captain Vihan Pretorius earned the best batsman accolade and Tristan Mecuur’s final match hat-trick earning him the best bowler award.

The senior league starts in January with Roodepoort hoping to continue their long term rebuild project while Blue Flag rated Delfos will have high hopes for 2021. “We would like to win the Premier and Presidents League and create as much opportunity for our youngsters to play in out top senior teams” claims Faizel. As the year ends, cricketers everywhere are focused solidly on 2021.
