Aquatics Gauteng hosts open-water swim event at Florida Lake

“We have to stay positive and do what we can to make every event a success.”

Aquatics Gauteng hosted the first round of their Grand Prix Open Water Swimming Series on Wednesday, 16 December.

The series would usually be made up of five separate events but due to coronavirus limitations, the series has been cut to just three races. Financial struggles throughout 2020 meant regional associations pooled their resources in order to make the Grand Prix Series a reality.

To ensure social distancing at the start line, swimmers lined up a metre apart on Florida Lake’s bank, before grabbing hold of a section of rope with special markers at one metre intervals. “It is just good to see swimmers back in the water. We have to stay positive and do what we can to make every event a success,” said recent inductee to the International Marathon Swimming Hall of Fame and Head of Swimming South Africa, Neville Smith.
