Memorable tournament on the cards after local league ban

“People of Zandspruit enjoy a beautiful game of football, and once the ban is lifted, we will arrange such – compliant with the present regulations,” an optimistic Mangena said.

A new year usually translates to new beginnings, sometimes with endless possibilities, but Covid-19 restrictions have somehow stood in the way of many dreams.

However, Zandspruit Youth Forum chairperson, David Mangena is one person who has chosen to be optimistic despite a challenging start to the year.

This sociopreneur and youth leader hosted a memorable soccer tournament before the end of last year which exceeded his expectation.

This well-attended tournament attracted clubs from neighbouring communities such as Cosmo City, Lion Park and Diepsloot, all with one aim – to shine the spotlight on talent in the area.

Mangena, who fully funded this competition, had planned to host more such exciting games, but Covid restrictions were intensified, resulting in him halting the plans.

“People of Zandspruit enjoy a beautiful game of football, and once the ban is lifted, we will arrange such – compliant with the present regulations,” an optimistic Mangena said.

Currently, the South African Football Association (SAFA) has banned lower-ranked leagues from any football activity until further notice. This ban also affects all competitions.

Mangena added that the plan is to host a top 16 tournament comprising teams from not only Zandspruit but the greater Joburg North communities.

Businesses and organisations hoping to sponsor this tournament can reach out to Mangena via email: mangenadt@gmail.com or call David on 072 035 2317.
