Poorte stun UJ in season opener
In a well-balanced game of good old South African rugby that saw the two teams using their forwards, who were so well bound together and kept moving towards each other’s goal lines, the game proved to be a match of two halves.

Roodepoort Rugby Club returned to their winning ways on Saturday, 22 May when they won against the tough to beat University of Johannesburg (UJ) at Scorpion Park.
Led by veteran prop Ian Pottas, the Roodepoort outfit marched on to their home ground with the determination of correcting a shortfall suffered to the very same opponents a few weeks back.
Poorte’s defensive unit and aggression at the breakdown rattled the students’ efforts to launch early attacks that could have easily hurt them early in the first half.
In a well-balanced game of good old South African rugby that saw the two teams using their forwards, who were so well bound together and kept moving towards each other’s goal lines, the game proved to be a match of two halves.
Through the provision of good ball for their running backs, Poorte changed their style to spread the ball wide for their runners to show their opponents a clean pair of heels.
Poorte scored four tries and secured a valuable bonus point. The tries were scored by Ruan du Toit, Tiaan Naudé, Barend Steyn and Ricardo Burger while Ronald Strydom was named Man of the Match.
The final score was 27–19 to the home team who showed signs of improvement as they soldier on in their quest for good results.
