Swimming club pushing athletes to gold and past personal bests
Season-ending event yields top medals haul
Time in the pool doing laps on repeat pays off when it is time to chase those podium places.
Training at Crawford International School Ruimsig, Aqua Athlete is celebrating a successful conclusion to their swimming season. The final event of the swimming calendar was, due to coronavirus-related regulations, split between venues in Germiston and Pretoria. Highlights for Aqua Athletes were three medals for Ethan Engelke, and a season personal best for Tayla Dowie.

The past season has come with a host of challenges that have been overcome with dedicated coaching and perseverance from the silver-capped swimmers. “They achieved 90 per cent personal best times across the season while also winning numerous medals during the season and at the season-ending competitions. They also achieved numerous national and age-group qualifying times,” said coach, Shaun Barston.

Aqua Athletes have expanded their talent pool, recently merging with Orcas Swimming Club, giving them the capacity to challenge for medals in multiple distances in the pool and in open-water events. The swimming season now takes a break, but excellence has no down time and the Aqua Athletes crew will continue training in earnest, looking to build on their 2020/ 2021 success.
