Paused at the start line for what has seemed like an eternity, one of the toughest challenges is ready to go.
Postponed multiple times due to the ongoing health crisis, The Wilro Lions Gravel Grinder finally has a date pinned down. While nothing is certain in these times, Sunday September 19 is the day set aside for the 2021 edition of the gruelling gravel gauntlet. The event is open to mountain bikes, hybrids, e-bikes or anything self-propelled that can tackle a gravel road.
The race will be held at the Tarlton International Raceway and will feature two distances – a 55km casual stretching of the limbs, or a 95km endurance challenge for the ultra-dedicated. “It’s a great venue, there is plenty of space with lots of parking, and we are looking forward to welcoming all cyclists to our event which is all for a good cause,” said Lions Club Wilro Park President, Sandy van Heerden.

“We invite all cyclists to join us for a fun but challenging event at Tarlton, home of our Wilro Cycle Challenges and our new Gravel Grinder. The safety of our cyclists is of the utmost importance to us and we will take extra care to ensure that everyone is safe. The motto of Lions is ‘We Serve’, and all the funds raised at this cycling event will go to our Lions Service projects, helping us to help others,” added Sandy.
The Lions core efforts or ‘Pillars of Service’ are hunger alleviation, vision, diabetes, childhood cancer, environmental issues and the youth. “We are all connected and everyone can make a difference to change a life, all whilst having a fun day out,” said Sandy.
