Super League and super speed footwork

‘Fast feet!’, ‘bend and flick’ and ‘here’, were some of the most common netball jargon used among team members to reach their wins.

On February 3, netballers swung into action as players all over Gauteng competed against one another in the Gauteng Senior Super League at Action Sports Hillfox, Weltevreden Park. The matches commenced from 08:00 to late afternoon and spectators, and family members came out to support their favorite players while they also got a chance to bond over food, drinks and action netball.

The Gauteng Senior Super League is one of the biggest tournaments for Action Netball as they get the chance to display which teams in Gauteng are the best and this was the ninth sound for teams to level up their gameplay.

Among the teams were the U23 Hillfox Hawks who are currently at the top of the league and known for producing SA players.

Kiara van Eeden is one of their top players who is only 17 and was selected to represent the SA U21 Youth World Cup Team in Gibraltar 2025.

“We usually receive a lot of high school outdoor netball players who wish to also play indoor and it becomes easier to adapt to the different rules since they are already experienced outdoor players,” said Rene Blok, the Action Sports arena manager. The games not only consisted of female players but also mixed teams where both male and female players who shared the passion of netball to get on the court and break a sweat.

West Rand teams who participated in the tournament were the Hawks and Key West who proved that they truly are the best in the west. Coaches who also work at the arena also participated in the mixed teams games. Among the mixed teams and couches were Sam and Stu McGregor, a couple who are not only coaches but have represented South Africa several times in Indoor World Cup tournaments and at several international tournaments.

“We were the first ever South African open team to win the Indoor World Cup and I have over 160 caps which is the most capped in the world for indoor netball so I feel very privileged to still be a part of the super league and play the sport I have loved since I was 15,” Sam said.

The remainder of the league is set to take place until March 2 when teams will play the finals.
