Junior Bowlers attend fundraiser for upcoming tournament

Junior bowlers get a chance to compete with Proteas at a fundraiser hosted by Randburg Bowling Club.

Proteas icon Gerry Baker, South Africa’s top bowler Jason Evans and several other Protea bowlers and Commonwealth medalists spent time with the Randburg Bowling Club’s juniors recently.

The purpose of the event was to raise funds for juniors who are selected to participate in the inter-provincial tournament to be hosted in Bloemfontien. Among the selected bowlers is U15s Taryn Guthrie and Caiden Spence-Ross from Agape High School.

Proteas veteran and Commonwealth gold medalist Bobby Donnelly, along with Randburg Bowls Club junior bowls coordinator Dale Gerrans, planned the tournament.

Both Taryn and Caiden started bowling at the age of 10 and 11, and one day hope to be a part of the Proteas bowling team. “In a male-dominated sport, I hope to inspire more girls to join and one day have a femae Protea’s bowling team,” says Taryn.

According to club president Deon Botha the junior members show great pride in their play and the calibre of bowling they are capable of. “There’s no denying that some Proteas in the future will be in their ranks.”

Everyone who participated, had a terrific day, and the junior bowlers received their caps for the U15, U18, and U25 inter-provincial tournament that will take place in Bloemfontein soon.
