Poorte battles it out with NWU

Roodepoort Rugby Cub goes head-to-head with North West University.

North West University (NWU) claimed a 50–15 victory against Roodepoort Rugby Club (Poorte) at Hoërskool Bastion on Saturday, April 27.

The match’s first promising attack came in the early minutes of the game, courtesy of Roodepoort’s captain. The Purple Army (NWU) dominated the match securing more tries than the home team in the first half.

The home defence was unpicked near the half-hour mark when slick handling as the Purple Army’s tight five forwards created a chance that was finished by NWU forward, but the theme of the home side scoring freely promptly resumed.

Poorte desperately needed to claim victory from this game to redeem themselves from their unpleasing 33–0 loss against Brakpan, but things didn’t go as planned.

According to NWU head coach Leon Boshoff, the players are still finding their feet in the league since they have 10 new U21 players in their squad.

“Practice and players’ dedication are the only factors that are helping the team to get productive results because they know that every game is important for the team and they must play from their hearts,” he says.

“It’s a good win because we were playing against the big brands as they have been playing for some time. We managed to utilise their mistakes and try to score more points as much before they strike at you,” he added.

Poorte started this season on a low tempo claiming unpleasing results from their last few games, but coach Willie Wepener believes that the team will be back to its normal standard in no time.
