New milestone for parkrun volunteer

Ruimsig parkrun celebrated one of their volunteer's 100th parkrun recently.

The Ruimsig parkrun is known for welcoming its volunteers with open arms, as well as bringing the community together … and best of all, celebrating together when one of their own achieves a milestone.

Shawn Bekker, a volunteer of the parkrun, did his 100th parkrun on March 30. He moved to Roodepoort in 2022 after first taking part in 2018 and since then he has dedicated his weekends to being an active volunteer.

“I first tried out a few parkruns, when I moved to Roodepoort and I finally decided on Ruimsig. I have now completed 41 parkruns here and although it is a challenging course, the parkrun volunteers are just amazing. I feel that the parkrun is just the right way to start the weekend. I missed my personal best on this course with five seconds on my 100th parkrun which was a little letdown but just a goal to beat in the future,” says Shawn.

Shawn loves getting his family and friends involved and encouraging them to reach their milestones.

“When I started parkrun, I got several of my colleagues to do it with me and this surely helped. So I would suggest getting friends, family or colleagues to join in, it is a great motivation and it is good exercise,” he adds.
