From grassroots to greatness
The future of junior cricket in SA looks bright as young players excel in the Lions Club.
Talent shines brightly for local sports hubs such as Hillfox Action Sports, where young athletes hone their skills and showcase their potential.
Among these promising players are junior cricket players Thristan Cronje (19), Danielle Weber (17), and JD Bezuidenhout (16), who are making waves in provincial circles and junior cricket in Gauteng.
Action Cricket at Hillfox has long been an incubator for fostering talent, providing a foundation for young players to develop their passion for the sport. While all three cricketers started their journey at a young age, each of them brought their own unique strengths and skills of play.
Their journey from playing school or action cricket to becoming provincial contenders is a testament to their hard work and dedication. Thristan and Danielle both currently play for the U19 Lions Club. Known for their precision batting and agile fielding, both girls made their debut in 2022 and have left a mark on their journey as they keep progressing.
“Playing for such a prestigious team has given us more knowledge on high-performance training and their skill of play. It has been both challenging and exciting, and we look forward to representing the U19 Lions Winter Squad,” Thristan and Danielle said.
JD made his debut for the Lions in 2023 after dominating in the Junior Indoor Men’s Cricket World Cup held in Dubai in September.
“I was very surprised when my dad called me to let me know. I didn’t think I would make the team, but it was a dream come true. I knew then and there that the hard work was about to begin, and I needed to secure my spot on the team,” says JD.
He is a versatile all-rounder known for his calm energy on the field and his explosive batting and bowling, has emerged as a force to be reckoned with at his young age. His ability to perform under pressure after getting comfortable has set him apart as a valuable player for the Lions.
Being inspired by players such as West Indies women’s cricket player Hayley Mathews and former legends AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla, their journey underscores the importance of grassroots development and the role of community support in nurturing the next generation of Proteas.
