Curro triumphs in independent soccer league
Curro Wilgeheuwel has once again come out on top in the Independent Schools Soccer League.
Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel’s U19 team cemented their domination on the soccer pitch as they achieved their third consecutive win in the Independent Schools Soccer League on August 6.
Although their journey with this prestigious tournament only started in 2018, the relative newcomers have achieved remarkable results and gained valuable experience since.
Curro Academy Wilgeheuwel competed admirably in 2018 but only started dominating the next year when they secured their first win in the U15 category.
When the league resumed in 2022, the same team that had triumphed as U15 players returned as first team (U19) players, successfully defending their previous victory under the guidance of the school’s expert coaching team.
Additionally, the school celebrated another victory by winning the U14 division.
A new group of first-team players took to the field in 2023 with one goal in mind; successfully defending the school’s title.
Their hard work and dedication to their mission paid off when they managed to secure an impressive win, thereby holding onto their title.
Their latest feat of victory saw the Curry Academy Wilgeheuwel first team defeating Rand College 4–0 in the quarter-final, before squaring up – and winning – against Trinityhouse Glenvista in the semis (3–1).
The hotly contested final against Crawford Sandton proved to be an action-packed affair with excellent plays delivered by both teams.
In the end, the team from Wilgeheuwel steamrolled their opponents, achieving an impressive 9–1 victory to once again take their place at the top of the Independent Schools Soccer League.
