Panorama conquers Soweto Marathon
Panorama Running Club takes part in the annual Soweto Marathon.
The 2024 African Bank Soweto Marathon hosted its 29th edition, drawing a record-breaking 25 000 participants to the vibrant streets of Soweto on November 3.
This iconic event, affectionately known as the People’s Race, showcased the perfect blend of athleticism and forming new bonds. Among the runners were the Panorama Running Club members with their running shoes laced up and ready to go.

The marathon kicked off at about 05:30, with the 42.2km runners facing the early morning heat head-on. The other participants followed suit, creating a lively atmosphere to keep them going.
Gangatha Mkele, the chairperson of the Panorama Running Club, tells the Roodepoort Northsider that this year there was an increase in the members who signed up for the 42.2km, 21.1km and 10km distances. Despite the unbearable heatwave, the club’s participants demonstrated that their endurance should not be taken lightly.

“Despite the heat, our members made it a mission to remain resilient and keep going at their own pace. It was beautiful to witness their determination, and we hope they are proud of themselves,” Gangatha said.
Panorama finished with decent times, cementing their new records for future marathons. With the community of Soweto cheering them on and generously providing water for participants, the unwavering support made running worthwhile.

Thokozani Mazibuko, the spokesperson for the Soweto Marathon, expressed pride in the event’s success, saying, “This was one of the biggest Soweto Marathons since its inception, bringing us together and we hope we host an even bigger marathon in the following year. Thank you to all who participated.”
