RFWL begins with success

The participants were encouraged to take the first step towards a healthier lifestyle.

Running or walking is one of the simplest and most effective ways people improve their health and fitness. At the launch of the Radiokop Run/Walk for Life (RWFL) branch on January 13, coach Marna Grobler shared valuable tips to help beginners start their fitness journey and stay consistent.

Getting started with walking or running

1. Start small, progress gradually: Marna emphasised starting with short distances and a comfortable pace, focusing on consistency over intensity.
2. Set realistic goals: Whether it’s walking for 30 minutes a day or preparing for your first 5km, setting achievable goals is key to staying motivated.
3. Invest in proper footwear: Proper walking or running shoes are essential to prevent injury and ensure comfort. Marna recommended visiting a speciality store for a fitting.
4. Listen to your body: She highlighted the importance of rest days and advised against pushing through pain to avoid setbacks.

Tips for staying consistent

1. Schedule your workouts: Treat your walking or running sessions as non-negotiable appointments.
2. Find a buddy: Marna encouraged participants to train with a friend or join a local group like RWFL for accountability and enjoyment.
3. Mix it up: To keep things interesting, she suggested varying routes, paces, or terrains.
4. Celebrate milestones: Acknowledge your progress, such as completing a longer distance or sticking to your plan for a month.

The importance of warming up

1. Prepare your muscles: Begin with 5–10 minutes of light walking or dynamic stretches to increase blood flow and reduce injury risk.
2. Improve performance: A proper warm-up primes your body for efficiency and endurance.
3. Mental readiness: Marna encouraged participants to use the warm-up time to focus and set intentions for their session.

Safety tips for walking or running on the road

1. Be visible: Wear bright or reflective clothing, especially in low-light conditions.
2. Stay alert: Avoid headphones or keep the volume low to remain aware of your surroundings.
3. Follow traffic rules: Walk or run against traffic and use sidewalks whenever possible.
4. Carry essentials: Always have your ID and consider carrying pepper spray or a whistle for added safety.

Marna’s insights reflect the supportive and encouraging environment that RWFL aims to foster. With sessions every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 17:00 at the Natural Dynamix School in Radiokop, the branch provides a welcoming space for individuals of all fitness levels to achieve their goals.
