On target for glory

Heinke Hartdegen is one of SA's best marksmen.

Heinke Hartdegen is currently ranking among the top 10 standard production optics shooters in the country and the reining champion in Eastern Gauteng.

As a member of the international practical shooting confederation, Heinke has been competing in this sport just for two years, yet he has cemented his place as one of the best marksman.

“I started competing for the fun of it. To be a top shooter you need to blend accuracy, power and speed. You need to have maximum points in the least amount of time,” he explains

“You also need to be prepared mentally and have a good stage plan and execution.”

Heinke reveals that he prefers competing in the Standard Production Optics division, citing the high level of competition as a major draw. “I enjoy the challenge of competing against the best,” he says.

“This division pushes me to be at my best, and I thrive on the excitement of competition.”

Many may view this sport with trepidation, Hower, Heinke says this is just a misconception. “Many people think shooting is dangerous, but it’s actually a very safe and disciplined sport,” he explains.

“In fact, it’s helped me develop valuable skills such as concentration, speed, and accuracy – all of which benefit me far beyond the shooting range.”

As Heinke continues to dominate the shooting scene, his sights are firmly set on the ultimate prize. With the World Shooting Championships coming to South Africa in 2025, Heinke is more determined than ever to prove himself among the best.

“I’ve got my eyes on the prize,” he says, his confidence and focus evident. With his exceptional skills, mental toughness, and passion for the sport, Heinke is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with.
