De Freitas speeds to victory in season opener
EDF racer dominates the first round of the SASCS taking the top two positions.
The 2025 South African Short Circuit Series (SASCS) season roared to life on a scorching hot day at the Vereeniging Kart Circuit on February 1, with racers from all provinces gearing up to compete against one another after a well-deserved break during the festive season.
Local racing sensation Ethan De Freitas had an impeccable end to his 2024 season, proudly claiming the Womza Regional SM50 Championship title.
Racing alongside his teammate Marnitz Otten from the EDF Racing Team in the SM65 Class, the dynamic duo was aiming for the top positions.

Ethan took pole position in qualifying with a blistering time of 1:00:07 seconds, narrowly edging out Marnitz, who qualified second with a time of 1:00:62 seconds. The heats were filled with action, including a dramatic crash in Heat 1 that saw both EDF Racing team riders go down.
Fortunately, both riders escaped uninjured and were able to restart the heat, and later both secured the top two positions. Ethan went on to dominate the day, winning two out of three heats and taking the overall victory with 70 points, while Marnitz took second place overall.
“Despite the nasty collision between Ethan and Marnitz, they both did very well for their first race of the season. We look forward to seeing more great things from the talented duo,” said EDF Racing Team head coach Mario De Freitas.
The EDF Racing Team’s strong performance has set the tone for an exciting season this year, and both racers are eager to build on their momentum.
