Fitness and fun at parkrun

Residents lace up their running shoes to embark on the weekly parkrun to achieve milestones and make new memories.

Every Saturday morning, the tranquil surroundings of Ruimsig stadium transform into a hub of activity as runners and walkers of all ages gather for the weekly Ruimsig parkrun.

This free event has become a beloved institution in the community, attracting a diverse range of participants – from seasoned athletes to casual strollers, families with strollers and furry friends on leashes.

Participants are welcomed by a friendly and supportive atmosphere. The course winds its way through the stadium, offering stunning views and a chance to achieve milestones by challenging oneself physically.

June Williams, a beloved volunteer, celebrated her 90th birthday last year with her loving and supportive parkrun family, and this year she celebrates her 60th volunteer credit, marking another milestone in her books as a dedicated parkrun volunteer.

Newcomer Rotundwa Mokgothu, who has only completed 20 runs, spoke briefly of how determined she is to be the youngest member to achieve a milestone.

“I love running, and I am currently the fastest at my school. The parkrun is considered an extra training session for me, and I love being number one, but a milestone would be even greater,” she said.
