Roodepoort Youth League rugby club open doors to girls
Join the growing women's rugby movement.
Women’s rugby is one of the fastest-growing sports in the world, and Roodepoort Youth League Rugby Club is proud to be at the forefront of this exciting development.
Two of their junior players, Kaylee Cornelius (13) and Chenicke van Zyl (7), who are both the only girls in their teams, have been making waves in the sport, recently being named “Man of the Match” in thrilling encounters against Wasps and Pirates.
Kaylee, who plays for the U12 squad, and Chenicke, who plays for the U8 team, have both been playing rugby for about a year. They credit the sport with building their confidence and say they feel amazing playing against boys.
“It’s an incredible experience, and we’re loving every minute of it,” they say.
According to Gavin Coetzee, vice chairperson of the club, they are encouraging and inviting female players to join this sport and get an opportunity to be trained and developed.
“Our goal is to eventually form a team that would compete locally, regionally, interprovincial and nationally. Women’s rugby is a rapidly growing sport, and we’re excited that we want to be part of it.
“We believe that rugby can be a powerful tool for building confidence, teamwork, and discipline in young girls, and we’re committed to providing them with the opportunity to develop their skills and reach their full potential,” Coetzee said.
He added that they are encouraging girls from U8 to senior level to be part of this thrilling development. To get involved, contact Coetzee on 066 299 9819.
