Couple embarks on 650km challenge to support friend battling cancer

The couple runs 21.6km everyday for 30 days.

Nickey Seger and Grant Clack are taking on an extraordinary challenge, running 21.6km daily for 30 days to support their friend, Dave Spurgeon, in his fight against throat cancer.

The couple are no strangers to charitable endeavours or the running community. Grant has completed 12 Comrades Marathons and 15 Two Oceans Ultra Marathons, among many others, while Nickey has finished two Comrades Marathons.

In 2022, Nickey led another campaign called Power of a Promise. When she heard of Dave’s diagnosis, she knew they had to act.

Within days she launched the Hope Powers Dave campaign on BackaBuddy, with the goal of raising R500 000 so Dave can begin chemotherapy and radiation as soon as possible.

But they didn’t just want to raise money — they wanted to inspire support. They committed to running 21.6km every day for 30 days, starting on Dave’s 65th birthday on August 25 and ending on September 23, covering a total of 650km.

Nickey met Dave about 18 months ago at a friend’s birthday party. Despite the short time, their bond grew quickly, rooted in Dave’s humility, kindness and willingness to support others. She was struck by his generosity and care.

“Dave is thoughtful and compassionate. Even when he was going through tough times — losing his medical aid during Covid-19 — he was always there for others,” Nickey said.

“I believe we’re stronger together. If our running can give Dave a better chance, then every step is worth it,” she explained.

Nickey and Grant split their daily runs into two sessions, covering different routes around Roodekrans. They have already run more than 367.2km — over halfway to their target.

“Some days are tough, but thinking of what Dave is going through keeps us motivated,” Nickey said. “Every kilometre reminds us why we’re doing this — for a friend fighting for his life.”

The campaign has already attracted 40 donors and raised about R35 000. While that is a strong start, there is still a long way to go to reach the R500 000 goal.

For Nickey and Grant, this is about more than raising money. It is about showing what can be achieved when people come together. “This journey proves that community support can make a real difference.

“We hope to inspire people to see what can be done to help and be part of the community,” they added.

“Every donation, no matter the size, and every share of the campaign helps. Together, we can make sure Dave gets the treatment he urgently needs,” Nickey said.
