Witpoortjie Bowling Club celebrates glamorous Ladies’ Day with great Gatsby flair

The day aimed at bringing women together in fundraising for the club.

The Witpoortjie Bowling Club was transformed into a 1920s speakeasy on Thursday, November 6, as it hosted its annual Ladies’ Day event under the theme The Great Gatsby.

The day attracted women from various bowling clubs in the area, including Maraisburg, Vereeniging, Florida, Discovery, Noordheuwel, Linden, Honeydew, Krugersdorp, Randfontein and Randburg, and featured a delicious breakfast, followed by 18 holes of bowling.

Many years ago, women had less access to the greens on any Saturday, and Ladies’ Day is a celebration of femininity and sacrifice. It is also about bowling clubs helping each other to raise funds.

On this day, lunch is usually served by gentlemen of that respective club, and there are usually great prizes up for grabs for the winning teams or individuals.

The organiser of the event, Tish Olwagen, said the day was a resounding success with plenty of excitement and camaraderie on display.

“The women were treated to a fantastic day of bowling. The event was also a great opportunity to socialise and network,” she said.

All proceeds made during the day will go towards maintaining and improving the bowling club’s greens.
