Roodebeeck 's majorettes dominates regionals

Roodebeeck and Roodenation are well on their way to majorette glory as they dominate regional competitions.

Laerskool Roodebeeck Primary School’s drum majorettes have once again shown why they are the team to beat during the Federation of Dance Drill Cheerleading and Majorette Sport Gauteng competition hosted at the school on April 18.

This was the second of six regional competitions held under the banner of the Federation of Dance Drill, Cheerleading, and Majorette Sport of South Africa each year, with the winners going through to two provincial competitions and finally the nationals.

According to head coach Sonja Nortman, there is nothing like the feeling when the hard work and dedication shown in preparation come to fruition on the field of competition.

“Our majorettes have worked tirelessly in preparation for this competition, and both the Roodebeeck Majorettes [juniors] and Roodenation [seniors] dominated in all of the categories on the day.

“As a school and a majorettes community, we could not be prouder.”

In the Mini Pom Junior category, Roodebeeck’s red and blue teams took first and third place, respectively, while Roodenation secured victory in the senior category.

Similarly, in the Mini Non-Prop category, Roodebeeck’s red and blue teams stood out head and shoulders over the competition, achieving first and second place respectively, while Roodenation once again took the top spot.

The Mini Flag Junior category saw Roodebeeck’s blue team take the win, with the red team in second place. Roodebeeck’s silver team took fifth position.

In the seniors’ event, Roodenation took second place.

The Mini Mace category saw Roodebeeck secure a gold achievement, while Roodenation took first place in the senior category, as well as a gold achievement in the Mini Baton Senior event.

Nortman adds that one of the most significant hurdles that young Majorettes have to traverse is financial.

“It is an unfortunate reality that financial barriers often stop children from participating in sports and other activities.

“A lot of hard work has gone into securing our school as one of the top contenders in this sport today, and we would appreciate it if local businesses could help us with sponsorships.”

Nortman adds that Roodebeeck will be hosting two more large competitions on May 9 and 23.
