Ruimsig parkrun veteran celebrates 250th milestone

Veteran parkrunner celebrated a remarkable achievement, highlighting years of dedication, perseverance, and a deep love for the parkrun community.

Julie Steyn (76) celebrated her 250th parkrun milestone and continues to prove that determination and community spirit can overcome life’s toughest challenges.

Steyn began her parkrun journey at Roodepoort parkrun, where she quickly became part of the growing community of walkers and runners who gather every weekend to stay active and connected. After the Covid-19 pandemic, she decided to continue her journey at Ruimsig parkrun, where she remains a familiar and inspiring face.

Her journey, however, has not been without obstacles. In 2023, she underwent surgery after doctors discovered a growth in her lungs. The health setback significantly affected her ability to run, forcing her to slow down and adapt to walking instead. Yet, rather than stepping away from parkrun, she continued showing up each week, demonstrating resilience and commitment that have inspired fellow participants.

“I encouraged younger people to become involved in parkrun events. Parkrun is more than just exercise; it creates a welcoming community where people of all ages can connect while improving their health and wellbeing,” she expressed with a smile.

“The events are free, accessible and help everyone prevent health-related issues,” she said.

Steyn’s story serves as a reminder that parkrun is not only about speed or competition, but about community, resilience, and continuing to move forward regardless of life’s challenges.
