Young equestrian shines at equestrian qualifiers
Her performances across the competition classes reflected her horse-riding skills and dedication.
Ava Nicholls, a learner from Pinnacle College Ridge View, recently gave an outstanding performance at the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (Sanesa) Gauteng West Qualifier Three Rounds.
The competition, held at Maple Ridge in late April, saw Ava competing against riders from schools across the region and achieved three podium finishes. She took first place in one dressage introductory level class and took third place in another event of the same class. Ava also secured second place in the Equitation Rider Special 50cm category.

Dressage focuses on the partnership between horse and rider, with competitors judged on control, balance and accuracy while performing a series of movements. Equitation classes assess the rider’s position, technique and overall riding skill. Ava’s results marked a successful outing for her as she obtained outstanding results in both disciplines.
Sanesa competitions are held throughout the year and allow school riders to compete while representing their schools in different equestrian disciplines. Riders earn points during the season as they work towards higher levels of competition.
The qualifier at Maple Ridge attracted riders from several schools, with events taking place across different age groups and competition levels. Ava’s results have added to the school’s achievements in sport and highlighted the growing participation of young riders in equestrian competitions.
