Running club host a Progressive Marathon challenge

A six-day run and walk event gives participants of all fitness levels the chance to conquer marathon distances at their own pace.

Run/ Walk for Life hosted an annual Progressive Marathon Challenge from May 11 to 16, offering runners and walkers of all fitness levels an opportunity to achieve their distance goals in a flexible and inclusive format.

According to Run/ Walk for Life member Linda Cloete, the challenge was inspired by the understanding that not everyone is able to complete an ultramarathon, marathon or half-marathon in a single day. Instead, participants can complete the distances progressively over six days, covering an equal distance each day from Monday to Saturday.

Participants had a chance to choose from a variety of distances tailored to different fitness levels and abilities:

• 54km Challenge – 9km per day
• 42km Challenge – 7km per day
• 30km Challenge – 5km per day
• 21km Challenge – 3.5km per day
• 9km Challenge – 1.5km per day

Cloete believed this initiative aims to encourage consistency, healthy living and community participation while making endurance challenges more accessible to both seasoned athletes and newcomers.

Unlike traditional races that demand long distances in a single event, the Progressive Marathon Challenge allows participants to gradually build momentum throughout the week, making it ideal for individuals balancing fitness with busy schedules.

“The challenge is open to both Run/ Walk for Life members and non-members, broadening participation and inviting more people to experience the benefits of regular exercise in a supportive environment,” she said.

Cloete added that the event continues to grow in popularity each year as more South Africans embrace walking and running as part of a healthy lifestyle.
