King’s School learners shine on volleyball national stage

TKSWR U17 boys and girls teams claim the runners-up position in the national volleyball tournament.

The King’s School West Rand (TKSWR) learners claimed silver at the Southern African Christian School’s Sports Association (SACSSA) national volleyball tournament on March 14.

This tournament attracted at least 57 teams from eight SACSSA regions, including teams from Botswana, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Vaal West, and the Free State.

According to TKSWR’s sport and culture manager, Garth Cruz, the tournament brings together top teams from across the country and offers learners valuable experience, exposure to high-level competition, and motivation to elevate their game.

“This initiative doesn’t just provide a stage of growth for our learners, but aligns with our values as a Christian school,” said Cruz.

The boys U17 team competed in the final and finished as runners-up, while the girls U17 team placed second overall, with both teams earning silver medals. Cruz believed this initiative acts as another step to balance academics with sport while complementing the school’s values.

“Playing school sports offers crucial physical, mental, and social benefits, fostering holistic development. It improves physical health by reducing obesity risks, enhances mental well-being by reducing stress and anxiety, and builds essential life skills like teamwork, leadership, and time management. It also boosts academic performance through improved discipline, focus, time management, and school engagement,” he added.

“Our coaches and parents are responsible for creating an atmosphere that promotes enjoyment as well as teamwork and sportsmanship. They should also nurture healthy attitudes toward competition,” he explained when asked about how school sports promote sportsmanship.
