Rosebank entrepreneur shares his flourishing journey in floristry

From sweeping floors in Plettenberg Bay at age 14 to running a flourishing Rosebank floral empire, Grant Donson’s story is one of unwavering ambition and artistic growth.

Rosebank based entrepreneur, and founder of Flowers by Grant Donson, Grant Donson reflects on his colourful and blooming journey.

“I volunteered at a florist store, but was doing miscellaneous chores like tea and cleaning. I had goals of being a florist. In my spare time I arranged flowers for clients which they appreciated and bought.”

The entrepreneur added that he was tasked with flower arrangements and décor for his matric dance farewell, which he enjoyed and executed with excitement. The same year, he saw his potential in the floral industry, making a decision to move to Cape Town where he learned from floral masters.

“I then moved to Johannesburg, where I was employed by another florist and informally started running a part-time business where I sold flower arrangements at a pop-up.”

In 2017, he took a leap of faith into full entrepreneurship, and formally registered his business. Donson also went on to complete a management essentials course at the WITS Business School, which is also when things began taking shape in his career.

“I have never had doubts in my journey, because I’ve always believed that anything was possible if I set my mind to it. I had a supportive partner who also encouraged me to further my education, which is what I am using as building blocks in my career now.”

He sharpened his skill set, refining his business development strategy, business analysis, financial management, marketing, and social media strategy, and was able to take his business to the next level.

Two years later, the entrepreneur now owns a fully-fledged florist, with a focus on staying at the forefront of floral trends.
