THE ANC Youth League held a panel discussion themed ‘Working towards a united and prosperous Africa’ at Wits University on Tuesday.
The panel discussion formed part of the ongoing 69th anniversary celebrations of the ANC Youth League and they discussed developmental issues facing the continent, such as education, sexism and other assortment of issues. Panelists included the Chairperson of the African Union Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, former youth league secretary-general Febe Potgieter-Gqubule and ANCYL convener of the national task team Mzwandile Masina.
Addressing about 200 young audience, Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma highlighted that by 2023, a quarter of the world’s under 25s will be on the continent. “If this huge number of young people is properly prepared, if we invest in these young people, make sure they have education, they are skilled, then this continent will be on a very good trajectory,” she said.
She challenged the youth to identify and accomplish the mission of young Africans. “You must use this power by participating in elections and taking interest not only in who gets elected but also in drawing up manifestos of parties wherever it is on the continent so that you influence the policies.” The youth were also encouraged to submit their ideas to an AU initiative aiming to collect the youth’s thoughts.
In achieving the idea of a united Africa, Mzwandile Masina said, “The programme is not far-fetched if our leaders are committed to the formation of the United States of Africa.
