Pupils closely examine history

Ancient history came alive for Grade 5 pupils.

Children from St John’s Preparatory School recently engaged in ancient Egyptian civilisation activities as part of the school’s history curriculum.

Challenged to replicate Egyptian artefacts, the pupils embraced the practical side of the lesson as they produced a bottle of home-made perfume, while others made a carefully wove sheet of papyrus paper.

No task proved too big for the boys as they designed and painted decorative canopic jars which were in ancient Egyptian times used to store the internal organs of the dead within the tombs.

Other activities included weaving baskets, producing ancient Egyptian games, including a Senet (a board game from ancient Egypt) and authentic Shadufs (agricultural irrigation tools).

Having enjoyed the practical side of learning, the boys excelled in their chosen tasks.
