Nameless street in Bramley is privately owned

BRAMLEY VIEW – Street in Bramley View is owned by an unknown association. Find out more here.

Residents of Bramley View in Ext 12 were caught by surprise when they were told that the street they reside in is not owned by the City of Joburg.

Residents had requested their councillor Irene Rugheimer to assist in naming the street, but to their surprise, the street is privately owned.

According to the City’s deputy director, Gideon Cruywagen, the street is owned by the Bramley View Homeowners Association.

Cruywagen said the street, which according to a GPS is registered as stand number 504, is not managed by the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA).

“That piece of land does not belong to JRA but instead to an individual. The street is a portion on its own but the houses there are in fact owned by the residents,” he said.

When residents asked who collected their rates and taxes if the street is owned by the association, Cruywagen said payments went to the City.

Regional director, Liziwe Makoro requested that the residents launch an investigation into the association and its existence.

Residents, however, responded that they had never heard of the association and claimed it did not exist.

They requested the City to ensure that the street was named as an add-on to Van Vuuren Road, which connects directly with the nameless street.

Ward 81 councillor, Irene Rugheimer said even though this would take a while she would launch the process at the next sitting of the city council.
