Armed robber Caswell Thomas Manthata was sentenced to eight years imprisonment for armed robbery in the Johannesburg Regional Court on 26 May.
On 5 March at around 19.45pm, a woman was coming from work walking along Umtata Road in Emmarentia when she realised that a man who was pushing a trolley was following her.
“She kept on walking and when she looked behind she noticed that the man was no longer pushing the trolley but following her. When she took out her cell phone to contact her mother to open the gate for her, the man approached her and demanded the cell phone,” said Captain Tintswalo Sibeko, spokesperson for Parkview Police Station.
The complainant started screaming. Manthata then hit the victim on her hand with a steel pipe and took her cell phone. He then started searching her and demanded money. Neighbours came out when they heard the commotion and the man fled.
“He ran out of luck when he was apprehended by 24/7 security officers who were alerted about the robbery. He was searched and the victim’s cell phone was found in his possession,” said Sibeko.
The man was arrested and charged with armed robbery. The case docket was allocated to Sergeant Shadrack Milondzo of Parkview Police Station for investigation.
Through his commitment and dedication, he managed to the secure a conviction. The station commander Colonel Theledi Gopane would like to commend Milondzo for his hard work and dedication.
