Sandringham sees a decrease in murder cases but an increase in sexual crimes

Recent crime statistics released by Sandringham Police Station revealed that crime overall in the area has increased.

Local statistics revealed an impressive decrease in contact crimes in 2016/2017 with murder and attempted murder decreasing by 25 per cent and 38.5 per cent respectively – a slow decline since last year.

Contact crimes such as sexual offences and rape have increased this year with rape increasing by 121.4 per cent and sexual assault increasing by 350 per cent. This significant increase reflects a high number of gender-based violence taking place in the area.

Property-related crimes decreased by only 0.4 per cent, with motor vehicle theft increasing as well from 67 reported cases last year to 127 cases reported this year.

Residential burglaries have decreased from 301 cases last year to 259 cases this year.

Carjacking in the area has decreased by 5.6 per cent while truck hijacking decreased by 50 per cent with only four cases reported this year compared to eight cases reported last year.

Crimes detected through police action decreased in the past year by 14.2 per cent.
