PICS: Jeppe police recover hijacked car and with weapons and ammo at the Mai Mai hostel

JEPPE – A car was recovered with false registration plates and was reportedly hijacked in Pretoria.

Johannesburg East Cluster Police have recovered firearms and a vehicle which had been hijacked on 25 January, however, the suspects are still at large.

This according to Jeppe police spokesperson, Captain Richard Munyayi who said they have launched a manhunt and seek the public’s assistance.

He said they had received a tip-off about a car occupied by two unknown gun-wielding males driving in Jeppestown.

“Our officers received information that a silver VW Golf 7 was seen driving along Green and Durban streets with two occupants carrying a firearm,” said Munyayi.

Automatic assault rifles with ammunition were discovered in a vehicle recovered at Kwa Mai Mai Hostel by the Jeppe police.

“The officers followed the information but could not find the car. While patrolling, they decided to go to Kwa Mai Mai Hostel, which is nearby Green and Durban streets. Upon arrival, they spotted a car fitting the description.”

Munyayi said the car was parked among other cars with no one inside.

The police looked through the window and saw a black bag lying on the back seat and an AK 47 assault rifle between the front seats. “They opened the car and when they searched the bag they found another two automatic assault rifles with five magazines loaded with ammunition.

A bag full of firearms and ammunition was recovered inside a stolen vehicle at Kwa Mai Mai Hostel in Jeppestown and police are searching for the suspects.

“They checked the car and found out it had false registration plates, and on further investigation, they discovered it had been reported as hijacked at the Themba Police Station in Pretoria in June 2017.”

The car was impounded and the firearms taken to Jeppe Police Station, added Munyayi.

No suspects have been arrested according and he appealed to anyone with information to contact Jeppe police.

An investigation is underway.
