City of Joburg Executive Mayor Dada Morero said the Joburg Open taking place next month at the Houghton Golf Club would be a momentous event for the city and attract foreign investors.
Speaking at the launch of the golf tournament, Morero said, “We thought it was important that we host the briefing to state our intentions. In essence, today is about launching this important move of taking the Joburg Open to Houghton which will be from November 24 to 27. We believe positioning ourselves in the international space allows us to open up for investments because foreign investors will be interested in the destination called Johannesburg especially because it is an economic hub.”
President of Houghton Golf Club Rodney Rottanburg added that the club was delighted to welcome the Joburg Open to the historic club.
“Houghton is a proud member of the Johannesburg golf community and we are honoured to reflect this by hosting one of the city’s premier sports events and a major international golf tournament,” he said.
Commissioner of the Sunshine Tour Thomas Abt said they had a good working relationship with the City of Joburg.
“We’ve been part of this journey for many years. Our director has been instrumental in driving our partnership with the City of Johannesburg. Our professional golfers will be playing for one million euros. In terms of the event, our field size will be 156 professional golfers – 78 international golfers and 78 local sunshine professional golfers.”
Abt added the tournament will be broadcasted across the globe.
“The showcasing of the Houghton golf club and the City of Joburg our broadcast during the four days will be going out to over three million homes across the globe. From an economic and tourism perspective, the Joburg Open is going to tick many boxes and we’re excited for it to start.”
