Crackdown on rogue security officers in Norwood
32 arrested for non-compliance in joint SAPS and PSiRA operation
A sweeping operation by the Norwood police in collaboration with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority (PSiRA) has resulted in the arrest of 32 peace officers found to be operating illegally in the Norwood precinct.
The operation, conducted on April 15, targeted unauthorised individuals working within the private security sector. According to Warrant Officer Eric Masotsha, the spokesperson for the Norwood police, the arrests mark a significant step in enforcing compliance with the PSiRA Act.

“These peace officers were operating without registration from PSiRA, which is a direct violation of Section 20(1)(a) of the PSiRA Act 56 of 2001. This section explicitly prohibits any person from rendering a security service unless they are duly registered,” Masotsha explained.
In addition to the 32 security personnel taken into custody, one manager responsible for employing the unregistered individuals was also arrested. Many of the accused now face further charges, as a substantial number are suspected to be undocumented foreign nationals. None of the arrested individuals were granted bail, and their cases have been postponed to next month for further investigation.

Masotsha issued a stern warning to operators of unlicensed security companies. “To those running fly-by-night security businesses, be aware, this is just the beginning. Our operation will continue for eight months, and we are closing in.”
He further encouraged members of the public to come forward with information regarding illegal security operations in the area.
“Your information is vital. If you know of any unregistered security companies or personnel, we urge you to report them. Together, we can uphold the safety and legality of our communities.”
Residents can report suspicious or illegal security activities directly to the relief commander by dialling 071 675 6057 or 081 001 0111.
