Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn welcomes their new president
The Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn welcomed its new president, Jankees Sligcher, with a warm ceremony filled with community spirit and African symbolism.
The Rotary Club of Johannesburg New Dawn held a heartfelt induction ceremony at Parkview Golf Club on the morning of July 16 to welcome its new president, Jankees Sligcher.
Helene Bramwell honoured the occasion by sharing the story of Jean Marie Julian, a Mauritian artist who dedicated his life to South Africa. Julian once gifted Nelson Mandela two gold pens of his own design. In tribute, Bramwell read his message celebrating honesty, integrity, and the idea that: “The pen is mightier than the sword.”

She also reflected on African symbolism, the assegai representing strength through unity, and the zebra skin symbolising a dream of a united South Africa. Black and white together, moving in harmony.
PDG Francis Callard (Past District Governor, which is the highest position a Rotarian can hold in our area), reminded guests that the heart of Rotary lies in fellowship and service. He encouraged the club to continue growing with members who value integrity and community impact.
In an interview, Sligcher shared the club’s Mandela Day plans, which include collecting clothing and toiletries for residents of Woodside Sanctuary. “Mandela Day is a reminder to serve with heart,” he said.
With renewed purpose, the club steps into a new chapter under Jankees Sligcher’s leadership.
