Mandela Day brings Pink Bra Project to Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital

Warriors With a Purpose led a cancer awareness initiative to warm hearts at Charlotte Maxeke Hospital as survivors handed out bras to inspire confidence and hope in women cancer sufferers.

On Mandela Day, Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital became the site of a heartfelt initiative by Warriors with a Purpose (WWAP), a non-profit dedicated to empowering women battling cancer.

Led by breast cancer survivor Renée Singh, the team brought their Pink Bra Project to life by distributing bras and panties to women undergoing treatment, a gesture that symbolised dignity, confidence, and care.

“We met women who felt invisible after their surgeries,” said Singh. “The bras may seem simple, but they represent strength and self-worth.”

The project also offered cancer education, awareness, and emotional support, with survivors speaking to patients and families about what to expect and how to cope. Singh explained that many recipients had never seen a soft prosthetic insert, something WWAP provides to help mastectomy patients feel whole again.

Partnering with Kids Kicking Cancer, the event also shone a light on young patients and the importance of emotional healing through mindfulness. “We want people to know cancer doesn’t only affect adults,” said Moses Sebopa, a representative from Kids Kicking Cancer. “Even toddlers are fighting this battle.

The day was filled with compassion and connection, a true celebration of Mandela’s legacy.

WWAP is calling on the public to donate new bras and panties to support the Pink Bra Project and help more women feel seen, strong, and beautiful.
