Parktown Boys and Holy Family learners help Killarney garden grow
Learners from Parktown Boys’ High and Holy Family College dug deep in Killarney Park, turning soil and spirits as they helped expand the community vegetable garden.
The Killarney-Riviera Community Garden has always been a place where neighbours gather to grow vegetables for those who need them most. This August, the little patch of green received a welcome boost of energy when learners from Parktown Boys’ High and Holy Family College rolled up their sleeves to expand the garden.

With spades, compost bags, and sheer determination, the boys transformed the space by building new vegetable beds and helping prepare the soil for future harvests. What began as a school service project quickly grew into something more, with many learners saying they found joy in making a visible difference to the park and the people who rely on it.
“It’s special to see young people helping to grow something that the whole community can enjoy,” said community organiser Priya Hargovan.
Fellow gardener Tracy Royal described the boys as having worked like Trojans, noting how their efforts left a lasting mark on the project.

For the Killarney-Riviera Community Garden group, the momentum is only just beginning. With dreams of launching a seed library to inspire new gardeners, the hope is that every harvest will fill, not just plates, but also nurture a culture of sharing and sustainability.
