St Teresa’s matric top achiever credits passion for academic success

Matric Rosie Lea Human achieved an impressive eight distinctions, crediting passion, careful planning, and strong support from her teachers and family.

For St Teresa’s High School matriculant Lea Human, academic excellence was never about chasing marks alone; it was about passion, perseverance, and the people who walked the journey with her.

Lea, a member of the Class of 2025, achieved an impressive eight distinctions, a feat she attributes to doing subjects she genuinely enjoyed and maintaining a strong sense of balance throughout a demanding year. “

I think one of the biggest factors was that I chose subjects I was passionate about. That passion made me want to do the best I possibly could. Knowing that my teachers believed in me also made a huge difference.”

While her results reflect consistency and discipline, Lea’s matric year was not without its difficulties. She faced personal challenges early on, which tested her resilience, but rather than allowing those moments to define her year, she focused on moving forward.

“I continued doing the things I loved. Being involved in the A Midsummer Night’s Dream production and surrounding myself with people who truly cared about me made overcoming challenges much easier.”

Managing the academic pressure of matric required careful planning. Lea ensured her work was always up to date and made a habit of preparing notes well in advance of assessments. This approach allowed her to remain actively involved in extracurricular activities, such as public speaking and drama.

“These creative outlets exposed me to new experiences and helped with my overall well-being. I also made sure to relax when I could.”

Lea is quick to acknowledge the unwavering support she received at home and at school. She credits her parents for listening patiently through moments of frustration and self-doubt, while her mother played an active role in helping her prepare for examinations.

“I also have to mention my teachers. Every single one of them showed incredible support and, over the years, taught me what I was capable of.”

When it came to studying, Lea adopted practical strategies that paid off. She began compiling and revising notes as early as Grade 11, particularly in subjects such as history, and made extensive use of past examination papers. One of her most effective methods was teaching her work to her mother, a technique she says reinforced her own understanding.

Looking ahead, Lea will be studying a BA Humanities at Stellenbosch University. While she is still uncertain about her long-term career path, she believes the degree will allow her to explore her interests further and continue learning with purpose.

Reflecting on her matric journey, Lea believes it has prepared her well for university life and beyond.

“Matric taught me that passion is the driving force behind success. My advice to future matriculants is to find what you love, and remember that you’re never alone in the process.”
