St Mary’s, Waverly tennis star serves up success on and off the court

From her first swing of a racket to representing Gauteng Central, Idara Usen is proving that passion, discipline, and heart can take you far.

Idara Usen is already making a name for herself on the tennis courts of Johannesburg.

A learner at St Mary’s School, Waverley, Idara’s journey began when she first picked up a racket at the age of eight. Drawn to the speed, precision, and thrill of the game, she quickly fell in love with tennis and has not looked back since.

Her competitive spark was ignited during her first tournament, where a tough loss in the final only strengthened her determination. “I remember thinking, I have to get better.” That moment, along with receiving her first medal, marked the start of her ambition to compete at a higher level.

St Mary’s, Waverly, has played a pivotal role in shaping her growth, providing a nurturing environment where teamwork, discipline, and sportsmanship are prioritised. With the guidance of dedicated coaches and strong leadership within the tennis programme, Idara has flourished, both on and off the court.

One of her proudest moments came when she reached the finals of the Joburg Summer Tennis Tournament, a challenging experience that tested her mental strength. Facing a close friend and teammate in the final added another layer of emotion.

“It felt strange but special. We pushed each other to play our best, and that made it unforgettable.”

Her hard work paid off with a selection for the Gauteng Central team, where she contributed to a bronze medal at the inter-provincial tournament. Known for her speed, focus, and calmness under pressure, Idara continues to refine her game, particularly her serve and consistency.

Looking ahead, her goals include excelling at school, as well as at the provincial level, with dreams of competing nationally. For younger players, her message is simple: Enjoy the journey, stay positive, and never stop learning.

With her talent and determination, Idara Usen’s future in tennis is bright, and this is only the beginning.
