Police target crime hotspots in Norwood under Operation Shanela
At least 15 undocumented individuals were arrested as Norwood becomes the latest focus of Operation Shanela.
A large-scale joint law enforcement operation was carried out in Norwood on June 19 as part of Operation Shanela, targeting illegal firearms, drugs, and criminal activity in abandoned buildings.
The operation involved members of the SAPS, Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD), Gauteng Traffic Wardens, and various private security companies. Officers conducted stop-and-search procedures, searching properties identified through community tip-offs, with a focus on abandoned houses suspected of being used by criminals.
“We are currently conducting a significant operation aimed at stopping and searching for illegal firearms and drugs,” said Warrant Officer Eric Mastosha. “A major concern for the public is criminals may use these abandoned houses, and we are actively searching these locations.”
