Houghton property that housed 90 undocumented foreign nationals disconnected
The Houghton Property disconnection followed a raid conducted by the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety Department and the JMPD.
City Power executed a level 3 disconnection at a Houghton property that housed 90 undocumented foreign nationals.
In a media release, City Power’s spokesperson Isaac Mangena explained, “The disconnection followed a raid conducted by the City of Johannesburg’s Public Safety Department and the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) on June 18.”
He noted that during the operation, authorities discovered severe overcrowding and health hazards, raising serious concerns about by-law violations, safety, and the illegal use of municipal services.

In line with City Power’s mandate to uphold the integrity of the electricity grid and ensure lawful consumption, the team removed both the feeder cable supplying the property and the internal cables within the yard.
Mangena said the decisive Level-3 disconnection was the highest form of cut-off, reserved for cases of gross abuse or illegal connection of electricity infrastructure.
City Power reiterates its zero-tolerance stance on the illegal use of electricity.
