‘Follow-home’ incidents are on the rise

CAP Security provides steps to combat ‘follow-home’ incidents

CAP Security located in Houghton released its weekly newsletter on June 27 which highlighted a concerning increase in ‘follow-home incidents’.

According to the security’s newsletter, these incidents is where criminals follow individuals from public spaces or shopping areas and strike as they arrive home.

The incidents often happen while waiting for gates or garages to open and can take place at any time of day. Even using ride-hailing services does not eliminate the risk.

Victims are often targeted for visible luxury items, vehicles, or after significant purchases or cash withdrawals.
Attackers typically strike during vulnerable moments as victims approach their homes, often waiting for gates or garages to open.
These incidents are not restricted to specific times; they can occur at any time of day, and using ride-hailing services does not eliminate this risk.

How residents can curb ‘follow-home’ incidents

The key to deterring these incidents lies in heightened awareness, strategic unpredictability, and immediate action, making you a ‘hard target’ from the moment you leave a public space until you are safely home.

Before leaving any venue, discreetly scan the area for lingering vehicles or suspicious individuals.

On the road, eliminate distractions and actively watch for vehicles that consistently follow you or change lanes with you; criminals often use multiple vehicles. Vary your routes and routines to maintain unpredictability.

If you suspect you are being followed

Do not drive home, your residence is your most vulnerable point. Immediately contact the CAP Control Room on 0861 227 227, providing your current location, direction of travel, and a clear description of any suspicious vehicle(s).

Drive directly to a safe, public location such as the nearest police station, a busy shopping centre, a well-lit commercial area, or a busy petrol station with visible security.

Avoid stopping or confronting the vehicle; stay calm and keep moving.

Approaching your residence safely

Before turning onto your street, briefly stop to discreetly check if anyone is following.

If suspicious, do not proceed directly home; instead, circle the block or wait in a safe, public area until you are certain you are not being tailed.

Use remote gate controls well in advance, avoiding idling at your gate. Ensure your driveway and entrance are well-lit and clear of obstructions, and always keep a panic button easily accessible in your vehicle.

Your active participation and heightened vigilance are fundamental to our collective safety.

By adopting these proactive measures, you significantly reduce the chance of becoming a victim, protecting yourself and your loved ones, and contributing to a safer community for all.

Stay vigilant, stay safe, and remember to report any suspicious activity immediately to the CAP Control Room on 0861 227 227.
